5 Tips for Packing Your Suitcase Smartly (and Saving Space)
at Team Voyagoux
If there’s one thing we’re all familiar with when we go on vacation, it’s a lack of space. It seems like you never have enough room to fit all your belongings into your (carry-on) suitcase, backpack, or duffel bag.
What you need, then, are 5 handy tips from real travel experts that will help you pack your suitcase so smartly that you’ll have space to spare rather than running out of room!
Let's start right away with thefirst tip...
TIP #1: Rolling vs. Folding
We’re naturally used to folding clothes and (bath) towels and packing them in our suitcases. But here’s a handy tip: instead, try rolling up your clothes, towels, and other “rollable” items.
By rolling everything up, you prevent wrinkles from forming, avoid wasted space, and ensure that everything fits neatly into your suitcase. Instead, rolling your clothes allows you to make the most of every inch of space in your suitcase.
Give it a try and see for yourself what a difference it makes. Even if you only roll up part of it, it’s very easy to tuck that section in between, next to, or on top of the rest, since it’s now rolled up much more compactly and efficiently on its own.
TIP #2: Use packing cubes
Another helpful tip is to use packing cubes. These are essentially small organizers that help you keep your suitcase tidy.
The different packing cubes therefore serve different purposes. For example, you can put your clothes in one, your underwear in another, and your socks in yet another.
Once all your individual packing cubes are filled to the brim with items from a single category, simply pack the cubes themselves into your suitcase. It doesn’t get any more organized or efficient than that.
Since you've chosen to compress everything, you can fit a lot more in!
TIP #3: Stuff your shoes
A truly experienced traveler will also tell you to stuff things into your shoes. After all, if there’s one place where you’ll find empty space in your suitcase, it’s inside your shoes. Obviously, you can’t fold them any tighter.
So, try putting things in your shoes, such as:
· Socks
· Underwear
· Charger
· Power bank
· Important cards
And you can probably think of a few more things you can store in your shoes. Depending on your shoe size, there are plenty of possibilities!
TIP #4: Use a vacuum pump
And here’s a fairly modern, innovative tip: use a vacuum pump.
When you choose to pack your clothes and other belongings in special vacuum bags, you can use a vacuum pump to remove all the excess air. This is extremely efficient, since a suitcase usually ends up with a lot of excess air (and therefore wasted space).
It’s not uncommon to save up to four times as much space when you pack certain items this way, such as:
· Sweaters
· Jackets
· Pants
· Pillows
Especially when people try this option for the first time, it opens up a whole new world for them. The space you save in your suitcase is often much greater than you might initially think. It’s definitely worth trying at least once!
TIP #5: Wear your thickest, heaviest clothes while traveling
Our fifth and final tip is an old “traveler’s trick” that has proven to be incredibly effective for decades now: wear your thickest, heaviest clothes during the trip itself.
Choose to do the following yourself during the trip:
· Wear your heaviest shoes
· Put on your thickest coat
· Wearing multiple layers of clothing
· Putting heavy, relatively small objects in your coat
With these tips, you can keep your suitcase as light as possible while also saving space for a few other items.
This means you currently have all sorts of options at your disposal to pack your suitcase as efficiently as possible and ensure that you really do have everything you want to bring with you on your trip.
